Importing Check Valves from India: A Buyer's Checklist

What to put in your enquiry, which standards to name and how to plan inspection and shipping when you buy check valves from an Indian manufacturer.

Industrial valves packed for export from India

India has become a regular source of industrial valves for buyers in the USA, Europe and the Gulf. The attraction is clear — established manufacturers, recognised standards and competitive pricing — but the success of an import order is decided long before the valves are packed. This checklist covers what experienced buyers get right at the enquiry stage.

1. Define the valve completely

A check valve enquiry should leave nothing to interpretation. Include:

  • Type — swing, dual plate, pressure seal swing or lift check
  • Size and rating — NPS or DN, ASME class or PN
  • Materials — body, cover, disc/plates, seat, hinge pin, springs and bolting
  • Ends — RF or RTJ flanged, butt-weld (with pipe schedule), socket weld or NPT
  • Service — medium, design and operating pressure and temperature, flow direction and orientation

2. Name the standards, with editions

Most international datasheets reference a design standard (for example BS 1868 for cast swing checks, API 602 / ISO 15761 for forged valves or ASME B16.34), a test standard (API 598 or BS EN 12266) and dimensional standards (ASME B16.5, B16.10, B16.25). If your project needs NACE MR0175 / MR0103, fire-safe certification, PED or another regulatory requirement, write it on the enquiry — not on the purchase order.

See which standards apply to which check valve.

3. Agree inspection and documents early

Decide whether you will witness tests, appoint a third-party inspector or accept the manufacturer's certificates. List the documents you need — material test certificates, pressure test reports, dimensional reports, NDT records — so they are produced as the valve is built rather than reconstructed afterwards.

4. Plan the shipment

Western India's container ports — Mundra in Gujarat and Nhava Sheva (JNPT) near Mumbai — are the usual gateways for valve exports. Tell the supplier your destination port, Incoterm and forwarder, and whether valves need special export packing, end protection or preservation for long storage on site.

5. Choose a manufacturer, not just a price

Ask where castings come from. A manufacturer with its own foundry — Jayant Valves operates the in-house foundry Ramdev Casting — controls quality and lead time from the melt onward. Check certifications (Jayant is ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 certified) and ask for references in your industry.
