Check Valve Standards Explained for USA & European Buyers

API 598 or BS EN 12266? BS 1868 or ASME B16.34? A plain-English guide to the standards that govern check valves in American and European projects.

Cast steel valves ready for pressure testing

Check valve datasheets in North America and Europe often look similar but cite different standards. Knowing what each one covers makes it easier to compare offers and to avoid surprises at inspection.

Design standards

BS 1868 — steel check valves

The British standard for steel check valves with flanged and butt-welding ends. It remains widely referenced for cast swing check valves in the UK, Europe, the Middle East and beyond. Jayant designs its cast swing check valves to BS 1868.

ASME B16.34 — valves, flanged, threaded and welding end

The key North American standard for pressure-temperature ratings, minimum wall thickness and materials. Jayant's pressure seal valves and Class 2500 forged valves are designed to ASME B16.34.

API 602 / ISO 15761 — compact steel valves

Covers forged gate, globe and check valves in small sizes. Jayant's forged steel lift check valves follow API 602 / ISO 15761 for Class 800 and 1500.

Testing standards

API 598 — valve inspection and testing

The most commonly cited test standard in the USA and the Middle East: shell tests, seat tests and acceptance criteria. Every Jayant check valve is inspected and tested to API 598.

BS EN 12266 — industrial valve testing

Europe's equivalent in two parts — mandatory pressure tests and supplementary tests. Jayant also tests cast and forged valves to BS EN 12266 Parts 1 and 2, which simplifies acceptance for European buyers.

Dimensional standards

ASME B16.5 and B16.47 define flanges, ASME B16.10 and BS 2080 define face-to-face dimensions, ASME B16.25 defines butt-weld ends and ASME B16.11 / B1.20.1 cover socket-weld and threaded ends. European projects may also specify EN 1092-1 / DIN flanges — always name the flange standard explicitly.

Materials and special service

NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 governs materials for sour oil and gas production and NACE MR0103 for refining. European pressure equipment may fall under the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED), and material certificates are commonly requested to EN 10204 type 3.1. Confirm these with the manufacturer at enquiry stage.
